EGT Question VERY confused!

Postby da1sexmonk83 » Tue Jul 13, 2010 6:10 pm

I bought a K type egt with Thermocouple and a voltage adapter thing from that O2 website. But when I got the EGT it had connectors on it that looked like this:

http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=htt ... s%3Disch:1

With the maie side being from the probe and the female side being empty. It has a positive on one side and negative on the other.

Is this at all right??? I am very confused as to how to connect this thing. there are no traditional wires so do I run my own?? Will it work?

The o2simulator site has changed their product setup, and I think the original item is no longer available. But let me understand:

1. You bought the voltage adapter: http://www.o2simulator.com/index.php?ma ... ucts_id=13

2. You bought the thermocouple somewhere else?

The thermocouple itself has the connectors you show?

I'm not an expert in this area, but I'd expect the thermocouple to come with its own wires as those extension wires are specialized.

I bought my EGT probe with those things already attached (I didn't realize it when I ordered it). The male side is connected to the EGT and the other side has no wires or anything. It can be opened up for positive and negative wires, so I am ASSUMING that default wires of the proper gauge could be used for the o2simulator adapter.

I'd recommend you check with the o2simulator guys, because I believe that EGT connections use special wires. Here's some that a quick Google search turned up:

http://www.motorsportsinnovations.com/wb_temp.htm

The latter is actually a cable with your type of EGT connectors on it, but it's expensive and maybe overkill.

I ended up hooking up a Stewart Warner EGT probe. But I think the readings are wrong. It is showing some temperatures that are higher than they should be and some that are lower than they should be so I am thinking the adapter, or the ECU+ has it out of range. Also my 4 bar map sensor is not registering the boost it should be, but my gauge (connected to the same sensor) is registering boost properly.

Here is a capture

Figured out the map part I believe. The input was 5v but the sensor reads pressure and send the signal back as 0- 1 volt. So I adjusted it to be 0.03 volts = 0 psi and 1 volt = 45psi. It now appears to be reading more or less correctly. My egt is still not reading properly however.

Post as much info as you can find about the EGT probe and the adapter and I'll look at it later in the week. I'm very busy at home the past two weeks.

Yeah, that looks about right. I bought the gauge and all from a performance shop here in town, but when the gauge went bad I bought the adapter to plug it in to the ECU+

I double-checked the ECU+ calculations, and they're right as per the formula on the o2simulator.com web site, and your posted .ecd file confirms that. (Note that the ECU+ file displays in degrees F, not degrees C.)

I also checked around, and the Stewart Warner EGT probe looks to be usable with the Stewart Warner 0-1600 or 600-2200 gauges, so there's no "special" probe from Stewart Warner and thus I think it's a normal K-type thermocouple. As such, it should work with the o2simulator adapter.

Bottom line: I don't know what else to look up. I can only suggest calling Stewart Warner and seeing if there's anything special about the sensor.

I will do that, and I will go back and re-do all my wiring.
